Bollards for Defining Vehicle Routes

As well as providing security, bollards can also be used to define a clear route for vehicles. This is helpful in many situations as it creates a clear designated route for vehicles which helps in directions and prevents vehicles straying from this designated route to avoid potential damage or safety issues. A typical application is for waste amenity sites and bollards can be used to designate where lorries and other vehicles should go.

The Danger of Damage to Bollards

However, there is a problem. Vehicles will, from time to time, hit the bollards. If they are large vehicles this will result in damage not only to the bollard but also to the foundations. Maintaining such bollard confined routes for large vehicles can be a costly business with lots of maintenance and repairs.

The Advantages of Bendy Bollards

The solution is to use Bendy Bollards. These are bollards which are flexible – in the event of a collision they will bend to an angle of 90 degrees without being damaged and will return to their upright position once the weight has been removed. This means considerable savings in replacement costs. Bendy Bollards are made up from 50% recycled rubber and 50% new rubber and have the same flexible properties as tyres. Tyres are designed to withstand all types of impact (kerbs, potholes etc) and bendy bollards are just as resilient.

As to road safety, the flexibility of the bollards has great advantages for vulnerable road users, such as cyclists, should they become jammed between a car and the bollard, and thanks to the impact absorbing and flexible properties of the vulcanised rubber a collision at low speed will leave practically no damage to the car, whereas collisions at high or reckless speeds are repaid in a less gentle solution where maximum safety together with minimum replacement costs are desired.

Where to Get Ro-Cycle Bollards

These Bendy Bollards are known as Ro-Cycle Bollards. They are flexible, maintenance-free and environmentally friendly. They are available in a variety of designs, each with its own characteristics.

Bollards 2 U can offer you a presentation to show you exactly how these unique rubber/bendy bollards actually work and give you a quotation upon request. We have much experience in installing Bendy Bollards for all sorts of applications.

Bollards Everywhere

Bollards are seen everywhere around the world, often to keep traffic from pedestrian areas but also to determine clear routes for vehicles, to prevent vehicle access to some areas and to provide security. Bollards come in a variety of styles: from decorative street furniture (styled to match the surroundings) to strictly functional. Bollards can be fixed, bendy or telescopic.

Bollards can be elegant solutions for bike parking, direction, protection and definition in construction and streetscape projects. As well as rigid bollards there are also Bendy rubber bollards are made up from 50% recycled rubber and 50% new rubber and has the same flexible properties as a tyre.

Bollards for Your Home

As well as their use in the street and in public areas, bollards can be used to protect your home. They can protect areas (such as lawns) from any vehicle access. They can also protect a driveway from unauthorised parking or protect vehicles (such as caravans) on a driveway. Such bollards can be styled to match the tone of the property they are protecting.

Types of Bollards

Standard bollards are great if you want to protect an area which will never need vehicle access. If you want to protect areas that will need vehicle access then you should use telescopic bollards which can be retracted into the ground when access is needed (otherwise they remain securely locked above ground protecting your property). The ultimate solution is an automatic bollard which will retract or rise automatically from a remote control which can be located in the house, garage or vehicle.

Where to Get Bollards

It’s important that you choose and install your bollards carefully. You need to select the right strength (you don’t want a protective bollard easily smashed by an intruder). Also, you need proper installation because even a strong bollard can be knocked over if its foundations aren’t good enough. If you want telescopic or automatic bollards then correct installation is vital. An example of a good supplier and installer of bollards is Bollards 2 U of Hungerford in Berkshire who have years of experience and many, many satisfied customers.

If you need to build an outdoors or underwater structure (for example fences and jetties) and were thinking of using wood then think again! Recycled plastic products are both more durable and more environmentally friendly than wood.

About KLP® Recycled Plastic Products

KLP® recycled plastic products have been produced by Lankhorst Recycling in Holland since 1975. They are perfect for many outdoors applications as they are both durable and environmentally friendly.

KLP® recycled plastic products can be used instead of wood for outdoors applications such as benches, fencing, reinforced beams, jetties, pontoons, mooring posts and protection matting. These products are made from 100% recycled plastic with no impurities such as wood.

They are environmentally friendly because as well as being totally recycled they do not leak harmful substances into the environment. In addition, these products themselves are
completely recyclable.

KLP® recycled plastic products have all the advantages of wood but none of the disadvantages! KLP® is easy to saw, drill, screw, nail andstaple. It can be made in any colour to blend into the environment. However, unlike wood it does not rot (even in water or harsh weather) or splinter, it is extremely strong, it is not flammable, it lasts much longer than wood (at least 30 years) and it never needs to be painted or maintained.

KLP® Products Outdoors

Typical outdoors applications, which are suited to recycled plastic products strength and
durability include…

Benches and tables

Fencing

Decking

Tongue and groove planking

Bollards

Soil consolidation (erosion protection)

KLP® Products and Water

Because KLP® products do not rot in water they are also suited to applications such as…

Moorings and jetties

Pontoons

River bank protection

Grip blocks

Bridges

Advantages of KLP® Products

Therefore, in summary, you should consider using KLP® recycled plastic products for any
outdoors or water applications where you would normally use wood. The advantages of KLP® are…

It is made from 100% recycled products for sustainability

It is itself 100% recyclable

It is environmentally friendly and does not leach harmful substances

It does not rot in water or harsh weather

It is strong and durable

It is maintenance free and does not need painting

It is easy to saw, drill, screw, nail and staple

It is 100% UV protected

It does not splinter and has no knots

More and more organisations (particularly schools and colleges) are installing canopy structures to maximise their use of available outdoor space. This article gives some examples of how canopy structures can be used. It also identifies some of the key issues involved in selecting and installing canopy structures.

Uses of Canopy Structures

A canopy structure is used to cover an outdoor space giving some protection from the elements so it can be used in inclement weather. Some examples of the uses of canopy structures are…

Covered walkways between (otherwise unconnected) buildings so that people can walk between them with some protection against wind, rain, cold and strong sunlight (i.e. UV protection)

Outdoor smoking shelters for offices, pubs and restaurants (you should remember that regulations permit that smoking shelters can be enclosed by side walls for no
more than 50% of their perimeter)

Outdoor eating and drinking areas for pubs and restaurants.

Outdoor waiting areas (for example bus shelters)

Outdoor play areas for schools

Selecting & Installing a Canopy Structure

Here are some of the factors you should consider when selecting and installing a canopy structure…

Canopy Structure Strength & Durability

The structure should be strong enough and durable enough to withstand normal use (and abuse) as well as weather conditions. It must be able to withstand impact, cold, rain, heat and UV radiation.

Canopy Structure Installation

The structure must be properly installed with adequate foundations. The installation contractor should be able to determine the structure strength and foundations required to withstand local weather conditions (e.g. in areas of high winds). The installation contractor should be able to perform wind calculations etc to determine needs.

Canopy Structure Extendibility

Make sure that the structure you get can be extended if necessary. You never know when you’ll need more covered outdoor space and you don’t want the expense of replacing a perfectly good canopy if you can extend it instead. Canopies from reputable suppliers are modular in structure so that they can be both extended and joined to other canopies.

Stuart Bichard, Managing Director of Bollards 2 U explained, “In terms of visitors to the exhibition, it was fairly quiet. However, the quality of visitors made it an exceptional return on investment for Bollards 2 U. We highlighted the commercial benefits of constructing smoking canopies and smoking shelters to maintain customer numbers.

We have worked with many licensed trade businesses that actually increased their turnover by the construction of a smoking canopy. They are easy to heat in the winter months and can ensure that pubs, restaurants and bars are not missing out on much needed trade.”

Bollards 2 U has worked with over 100 licensed premises before the introduction of the smoking ban. The company also has suitable structures for schools and attractions such as zoo’s and theme parks.

Other products in the Bollards 2 U product range include street furniture from static bollards to automatic rising bollards, through to bus and cycle shelters and street benches.

Notes to Editors

Bollards 2 U supplies and installs all its products and has worked with attractions, schools and local councils throughout the UK. Its smoking shelter and smoking canopy range of products has proved popular with pubs, clubs, restaurants and bars.

Where will smoking be banned?

Smoking in all indoor public places. Many places – such as cinemas and public transport – have rarely permitted smoking in recent years, and so it will be places like pubs, restaurants, nightclubs and private members’ clubs that feel the biggest impact of the ban.

What are the penalties?

Smokers could be fined £50. Those in charge of “premises” could have a fine of £2500, they could also be fined £200 rising to £1000 for not displaying no smoking signs.

When will the ban come into force?

England – July 1st, 2007

Scotland – March 2006

Wales – April 2nd, 2007

Northern Ireland – April 30th, 2007

With all the above in mind bollards2u can solve your problems, you must consider providing smoking shelters or canopies which offer a safe, designated smoking area for the comfort of your valued staff or customers, yet still complying with the new law.

Create the perfect smoking shelter by providing your staff with our canopy structures or purpose-built shelters for offices/business premises.

Beat the smoking ban. Public houses, hotels and restaurants are already benefiting from our smoking canopies by increasing the size of their restaurants, getting more covers and attracting new and extra business. Extending their premises without the cost and inconvenience of building an extension.

Business premises/offices – don’t lose your valued staff by not providing a safe designated smoking shelter!

Public houses, hotels and restaurants – don’t lose the trade of your smoking customers!
